President’s Message: January, 2023

Welcome to a new year.  Welcome to 2023.  Looks like we have made it through 2022, which just happens to be an important transition year coming away from the covid pandemic.  It was a year where we, as a club, struggled to get back to our “routine” activity and function.  Although we had to cancel our second meeting into the year, the club steadily and expeditiously progressed back to our monthly meeting and routine.  We especially ended the year on some high points.  Both new and seasoned Gates members were able to participate in the club’s botanic field trip and the annual December holiday party celebration.  What a joy.

The board and I would like to thank everyone who came to the holiday potluck and shared their special dish.  We never have a shortage of food!  Thank you again to Tommy Dodson for sharing your incredible talents as our holiday entertainer.  You made the evening that much more memorable.  Congratulations to the 2022 mini show entrants who scored high points for their plants.  Start bringing in your plants this month.  The succulent plant category will be Aloe and the cactus plant will be Mammillaria clusters. Starting this month, you can renew your club membership.  The good news is that the dues remain the same, $20.00 for regular email correspondence and $35.00 for special “Grandfathered members”.  You can renew your membership in person at the meeting or you can send your membership dues to the Treasurer.  Please ensure to update and/or provide your correct email and correspondence information.

As we start up 2023, please share your ideas and suggestions on how the club can be better and more meaningful.  The club appreciates everyone’s contribution, however big or small.  One of the many highlights for each cactus and succulent societies is their annual plant show and sale.  Our show and sale will be on May 6-7th of this year.  We are currently in the planning stage and there is plenty of work to get done.  We need your help!  More details will be shared at the meeting.  In the meantime, set your calendar for that weekend.  The list of other cactus and succulent events for 2023 will be available in the newsletter and on the club’s website.  Start planning your weekends!
