March 2025 President’s Message

In just two short months we will be hosting our annual show and sale. This is not only our club’s major revenue stream to maintain operations, but also a huge opportunity to grow our membership and showcase our interests.

Peter Breslin | February 14th Speaker

The Gates Meeting on February 14th at 7pm PST will feature a talk by Peter Breslin, PhD, on the future of the giant saguaro. He will discuss recent studies highlighting the effects of heat and drought stress on saguaros, including increased mortality and vulnerability, alongside his extensive experience in cactus research.

February 2025 President’s Message

I hope everyone is safe and you are enjoying time with your family and friends. It is important to take this time to practice gratitude and appreciation, especially as so many of our fellow LA-based cacti and succulent community members have lost not only their beloved succulent collections, but also their homes and livelihoods.

January Mini Show

Mammillarias are easy-to-grow succulents that thrive in sunny, hot climates, although some can be sensitive to temperature extremes. Aeoniums, Sempervivums, and Sedums have diverse origins and growth conditions. While Mammillarias bloom year-round, Sempervivums and Aeoniums need careful attention to avoid pests and stress from heat, showcasing unique beauty with their flowers and foliage.

The First 2025 President’s Message

The November meeting for Gates is scheduled for Friday, focusing on BBQ results, a succulent nursery field trip on November 9th, and upcoming elections for two Board positions. Participants are reminded to bring a bagged lunch for the trip and to take a ballot for voting during the meeting. See you soon!

December, 2024 President’s Message

November Speakers | Elias Aparicio, Rene Hernandez, Phuc Huynh

On November 8th at 7pm PST, the Redlands Church of the Nazarene will host a presentation on growing succulents from seeds and propagation. The event will cover basic information, offer demonstrations for seed sowing and cuttings, and encourage both novices and seasoned growers to expand their plant collections effectively.

The presentation by Tom Glavich will focus on flowering plants from South Africa’s Winter, covering their cultivation and propagation. Glavich is an experienced grower affiliated with several botanical societies.
